"What About Abortion?"

Before opening the Bible, let's consider some facts about abortion:

Every year in the United States of America, more than 1,000,000 children are aborted. Since 1973, when the Supreme Court legalized abortion-on-demand, America has authorized the death of more than 50,000,000 babies. (Source: lifenews.com)

I want to come right out and lay my cards on the table. I am pro-life. The abortion issue, to me, is the most important issue of our day. With full respect to the atrocities that occurred in Nazi-Germany, it's my belief that abortion is a modern-day holocaust. These statements are simply my assertions; let's look at the argument. I believe it is beautifully simple:

Premise #1: It is wrong to murder a person.
Premise #2: The unborn is a person.
Conclusion: Therefore, it is wrong to murder the unborn.

Premise #1: It is wrong to murder a person.
There are few objections to the notion that it is wrong to murder a person. Murder is the unlawful taking of someone's life, while killing is the lawful taking of someone's life. "Whoever shed the blood of man, by man shall his blood be shed; for in the image of God, has God made man." Genesis 9:6

Premise #2: The unborn is a person.
It is this premise which is disputed by many in our culture today. However, the Bible clearly teaches that the unborn is a person due to the following reasons.

Possession of Personal Attributes
The unborn possesses personal attributes such as joy. "For behold, when the sound of your greeting reached my ears, the baby leaped in my womb for joy." Luke 1:44

Described by Personal Pronouns
The Bible also uses personal pronouns to describe unborn children. Jeremiah 1:5 says, "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, And before you were born I consecrated you; I have appointed you a prophet to the nations."

Protected by the Same Punishment as for Adults
Perhaps the strongest argument against abortion from Scripture is the fact that the same punishment is applicable to someone who kills or injures an unborn child as for one who kills or injures an adult. Exodus 21:22-23 states, "If men struggle with each other and strike a woman with child so that she gives birth prematurely, yet there is no injury, he shall surely be fined as the woman's husband may demand of him, and he shall pay as the judges decide. But if there is any further injury, then you shall appoint as a penalty life for life..." This strongly indicates that the Mosaic Law viewed the unborn as persons worthy of the same protection and rights as adults.

Called by God Before Birth
The unborn are even called by God before birth. Almost echoing the prophetic commission of Jeremiah in Jeremiah 1:5, Isaiah 49:1 says, "Listen to me, O islands, And pay attention, you peoples from afar, the LORD called me from the womb; from the body of my mother He named me."

Known Personally by God just like any other Person
The unborn are known personally and intimately by God in the same way He would know any other person. Describing David, Psalm 139:15-16 says, "My frame was not hidden from You, when I was made in secret, and skillfully wrought in the depths of the earth; Your eyes have seen my unformed substance; and in Your book were all written; the days that were ordained for me, when as yet there was not one of them."

Conclusion: It is wrong to murder the unborn.

The Bible definitely teaches that the unborn are persons because the unborn possess personal attributes, are described by personal pronouns, the unborn are called children, are protected by the same punishment as for adults, are called by God before birth, and are known personally by God just like any other person. Since abortion is murdering a person, abortion is morally wrong. For the Christian, abortion is not a matter of a woman's right to choose. It is a matter of the life or death of a human being made in God's image.

The first argument that always arises against the Christian stance on abortion is "What about cases of rape and/or incest?" As horrible as it would be to become pregnant as a result of rape and/or incest, is the murder of a baby the answer? Two wrongs do not make a right. The child who is a result of rape/incest could be given in adoption to a loving family unable to have children on their own, or the child could be raised by his/her mother. Again, the baby is innocent of the act of rape or incest, therefore he/she should not be punished for the evil acts of his/her father.

The second argument that usually arises against the Christian stance on abortion is "What about when the life of the mother is at risk?" This is more like a red herring, but it does need to be addressed. I say it's mostly a red herring because this situation happens in less than 5% of the abortions done in the world today. Far more women have an abortion for convenience than women who have an abortion to save their own lives. The fact of the matter is that over 90 percent of the abortions performed today involve women who simply do not want to have a baby. Less than 10 percent of abortions are for the reasons of rape, incest, or the mother's health at risk. Even in the more difficult 10 percent of instances, abortion should never be the first option. The life of a human being in the womb is worth every effort to allow the child to be born. Let's not forget that God is a God of miracles. He can preserve the life of a mother and a child despite all the medical odds being against it. Ultimately, though, this question can only be decided between a husband, wife, and God. Any couple facing this extremely difficult situation should pray to the Lord for wisdom as to what He would have them to do. Again, this is a very rare case, and even so, abortion should never be the first option.

For those who have had an abortion, remember that the sin of abortion is no less forgivable than any other sin. Through faith in Christ, all sins can be forgiven. A woman who has had an abortion, a man who has encouraged an abortion, or even a doctor who has performed one - can all be forgiven by faith in Jesus Christ.
